About

Silvia Dante graduated in Physics at the University of Genoa (Italy) in 1990, with a Master thesis entitled ‘Polymerizable monolayers at the air/water interface studied by epifluorescence microscopy’. From 1990 to 1994 she accomplished her PhD studies in Biochemisty and Biophysics at the Institute of Physical Science of University of Ancona, submitting a thesis on the ‘Characterization of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of Archaeal lipids by scattering techniques’. After a postdoc year at the University of Ancona and a one year contract as adjunt professor in Biophysics at the Faculty of Science in the same University, she moved to the U.S. From 1996 to 1998 she was postdoc fellow of CPIMA (Center of Polymer Interface and Macromolecular Assemblies) at University of California, Davis and at Stanford Universityto investigate the nucleation of iron nanoparticles with a biomimetic approach. From 1998 to 2008 she was employed at the Helmoltz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie in Berlin (Germany) as beam scientist, responsible for a neutron diffractometer dedicated to the investigation of biologicalmembranes. She performed research mainly in the localization of medically relevant peptides, such as beta-amyloid, in model membranes.

Since August 2008, she has a team-leader position at Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), shared between the Nanophysics and the NBT departments. The research projects focus on the characterization of membrane and cellular adhesion on patterned and/or biofunctionalized surfaces.

She is co-author of about 80 peer-reviewed international papers and of others in conference proceedings; she is herself is referee in many highly ranked scientific journal. She is a member of national (SIF, SISN) and international societies (Biophysical Society).

Silvia Dante has a very interdisciplinary background and a strong experimental background in the structural characterization of biological systems. She canuse independently the following analytical and/or spectroscopic techniques: X-rays and neutron diffraction and reflectivity, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescence spectroscopy, QCM-D.
